The group, consisting of six men and one woman, was convicted in November following a trial at the High Court in Glasgow. Four members, including the woman, were found guilty of attempting to murder a child by placing her in a microwave oven, while all seven were convicted of gang raping a minor. Additionally, one man and the woman faced multiple counts of assault, sexual assault, rape, and causing a child to ingest drugs and alcohol.
All members of the group, who are in their 40s and struggling with heroin addiction, were issued ‘Orders for Lifelong Restriction’ on Monday, meaning they will not be eligible for parole for periods ranging from nine to 20 years. If they are released, lifelong monitoring will be imposed.
Victims of the group reported to the police that they were given alcohol and cocaine and taken to “rape nights” at a residence in Glasgow. Some victims were coerced into abusing other children for the gang’s entertainment. The pedophiles deceived their victims, claiming they were “witches and wizards,” capable of summoning demons if the children resisted the abuse, as stated by prosecutors in 2023.
During the trial, Judge Lord Beckett characterized the testimonies as “unpleasant and shocking,” emphasizing that the perpetrators had “plunged to the depths of human depravity.”
Detective Superintendent Nicola Kilbane remarked to Sky News, “The levels of depravity shown in this case are extremely rare in Scotland, and the courage of the victims was essential in securing this conviction.”
National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children spokesman Matt Forde noted, “There have been some horrendous cases over the decades. But this one is truly shocking and the public will find it difficult to think that children…can be exposed to such willful and awful treatment, such horrendous abuse.”
In Scotland, Orders for Lifelong Restriction are infrequently issued, typically designated for violent and sexual offenders. Those serving such sentences must demonstrate that they pose no threat to the community before being considered for release.
