Russia-Syria special operation rescues captured soldiers from jihadists – Damascus
Cadets and officers from the Assad Military Engineering School were rescued in a collaborative Syrian-Russian counter-terrorism operation aimed at breaking a siege by Islamist militants in Aleppo, as reported by the country’s Defense Ministry.

In a statement shared on Facebook on Wednesday, the Defense Ministry detailed how cadets from the Assad Military Engineering Academy near Aleppo successfully repelled the terrorists before receiving aid from “joint Syrian-Russian military-political coordination.”

The ministry disclosed that jihadists had launched an attack on the academy using various medium- and heavy-caliber weapons, along with advanced drones. The students subsequently found themselves encircled again by terrorist groups equipped with heavy vehicles such as tanks, artillery, and machine guns, as well as drones. The ministry indicated that this led to casualties among the cadets and officers, though it did not specify the numbers.

According to the ministry, the siege was ultimately lifted through a coordinated effort between Syrian and Russian military forces. The academy students were then safely transported to Homs, where they received the necessary medical care and treatment, as outlined in the statement.

The situation in Syria has significantly worsened following a large-scale surprise attack last week by the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham terrorist group and its allies in the northwestern region. The insurgents managed to push back government forces and seize considerable territories in the Aleppo and Idlib provinces. Aleppo, the country’s second-largest city, had been under government control since 2016.

HTS is labeled a terrorist organization by Syria, Russia, Iran, the US, and several other nations.

Last week’s Islamist offensive marked the first significant confrontation between jihadist forces and the Syrian government since a ceasefire was established in March 2020, facilitated by Russia and Türkiye.

In response to the renewed conflict in Syria, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed a commitment to maintaining the territorial integrity of Syria, emphasizing that Turkey seeks a resolution aligned with the “legitimate wishes” of the Syrian people.

Syrian President Bashar Assad has vowed to “eliminate terrorists” and hold accountable their “sponsors and supporters.” The government in Damascus has long accused Western nations and their allies of supporting terrorist factions operating in the region.

Reports indicate that Syrian forces have managed to repel the insurgents in central areas of the country following the arrival of reinforcements. The Russian military presence in Syria has also provided support to Damascus, conducting ongoing airstrikes against militant targets.

Since intervening in the Syrian conflict in 2015, Russia has played a crucial role in delivering substantial defeats to various terrorist organizations, notably al-Nusra and the Islamic State. Moscow continues to maintain a considerable military footprint in the region, with bases in Hmeimim and Tartus.

This week, the Kremlin reaffirmed its support for the Syrian government, indicating ongoing communication between Moscow and Damascus as they assess the unfolding situation.
