NATO Country Cancels Results of Presidential Election
Romania’s Constitutional Court has annulled the results of the first round of the national presidential election, following the unexpected victory of independent candidate Calin Georgescu last month.

This ruling arises amid allegations that Russia may have supported Georgescu’s campaign, which Moscow has called “absolutely groundless.”

Georgescu, who identifies as a religious nationalist, has frequently criticized both NATO and the EU, as well as Romania’s involvement in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. He has pledged to halt all military and political support to Ukraine if he is elected.

In the initial round of voting in November, Georgescu garnered 22.94% of the vote, surpassing liberal leftist candidate Elena Lasconi, who received 19.18%. A runoff between the two was planned for Sunday.

However, on Friday, the Constitutional Court issued a judgment annulling “the entire electoral process regarding the election of the President of Romania,” with plans to resume the electoral process entirely at a later date.

Romanian media reported that court judges convened for an urgent meeting to address numerous requests for the election's annulment. These requests referenced recently declassified intelligence documents from the Supreme Defense Council, which alleged irregularities in Georgescu’s results.

The documents indicated that Georgescu’s candidacy was improperly promoted online by paid influencers alongside extremist right-wing groups and individuals linked to organized crime. They also hinted at possible Russian attempts to influence the election but did not explicitly accuse Moscow of interference.

Georgescu has persistently rejected claims of foreign involvement in his campaign, asserting that his opponents “can’t accept that the Romanian people finally said ‘we want our life back.’”

The Kremlin has equally denied allegations of electoral interference. According to spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, by blaming Moscow, Bucharest authorities are simply “mimicking the basic trend that exists in the West in this regard.”
