Russia Accuses West of Supporting Terrorists in Syria
Moscow is collaborating with Ankara and Tehran to stabilize the ongoing situation, according to Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

Lavrov indicated that Russia has received information suggesting that the US and the UK could be involved in backing the al-Qaeda-affiliated militants who are currently active in Syria. During an interview that aired on Thursday, US journalist Tucker Carlson questioned Lavrov about the support for these terrorists.

”Well, we have some information,” Lavrov stated. “The information which is being floated and it’s in the public domain, mentions, among others, the Americans, the Brits. Some people say that Israel is interested in making this situation aggravated so that Gaza is not under very close scrutiny.”

He added, “It’s a complicated game. Many actors are involved,” highlighting the complex web of influences at play.

Lavrov elaborated that Russia, Iran, and Türkiye successfully negotiated a ceasefire in Syria in both 2017 and 2020, referring to this Astana Format as “a useful combination of players.”

“The rules of the game are to help Syrians to come to terms with each other and to prevent separatist threats from getting strong,” Lavrov explained. He criticized US actions in eastern Syria, stating, “That’s what the Americans are doing in the east of Syria when they groom some Kurdish separatists using the profits from oil and grain sold, the resources which they occupy.”

He expressed a desire to engage with all partners involved to explore ways to disrupt the financing and arming of terrorist groups.

Lavrov noted that he has already been in discussions with his Turkish and Iranian counterparts and planned to meet with them again on Friday during a conference in Qatar. He expressed Russia’s intention to advocate for “strict implementation” of the agreements regarding Idlib, as that region is where the terrorists have originated.

“The arrangements reached in 2019 and 2020 provided for our Turkish friends to control the situation in the Idlib de-escalation zone and to separate the HTS from the opposition, which is non-terrorist and which cooperates with Türkiye,” Lavrov said.

He also mentioned that military and security leaders from all three countries are maintaining communication with one another.

During the interview, Carlson expressed concern about the increasing tensions between the US and Russia over Ukraine, stating he was appalled by the situation. He mentioned his attempts to secure an interview with Ukraine’s President, Vladimir Zelensky, which were reportedly blocked by the US government.
