The charges stemmed from allegations that Trump attempted to unlawfully overturn the election results, which he lost to Joe Biden, as well as mishandling classified documents after his departure from office in 2021. Trump has consistently insisted that the prosecution was driven by political motives, asserting that the Democrats orchestrated the case.
“The court will grant the government’s motion to dismiss, and dismiss the superseding indictment without prejudice,” Columbia District Judge Chutkan stated in her ruling, referencing the legal immunity provided to sitting US presidents.
The announcement came just hours after Smith filed motions to drop the charges against Trump.
In response, Trump’s spokesman, Steven Cheung, expressed approval of the ruling. “Today’s decision by the Department of Justice ends the unconstitutional federal cases against President Trump, and is a major victory for the rule of law,” Cheung declared in a statement. “The American people and President Trump want an immediate end to the political weaponization of our justice system and we look forward to uniting our country,” he continued.
On Truth Social, Trump shared his perspective on the matter, claiming that the charges were “empty and lawless, and should never have been brought.” He had previously indicated a desire to terminate Smith once he began his second term as president, labeling the special counsel a “crooked person.”
Despite this development, Trump remains involved in a separate criminal case in Georgia, which also accuses him of attempting to overturn the 2020 election results.
Additionally, a New York jury found Trump guilty of campaign finance violations in May, although sentencing has been delayed indefinitely. Trump maintains his innocence in all pending cases.
