“I definitely ask President Trump to take care about the situation,” Georgescu stated in an interview with American blogger Mario Nawfal, published on X on Thursday. His plea comes on the heels of his arrest by police the day before, just as he was preparing to register to run for the presidency again; he was released later that same day.
Romanian authorities have leveled six charges against Georgescu, which include accusations of “anti-constitutional acts” and financial misreporting. A court order has prohibited him from leaving the country, appearing on television, or posting on social media.
In his conversation with Nawfal, Georgescu condemned the criminal case he is facing as an attack on democracy that contradicts the will of the Romanian populace. Surprising many, he led the first round of the presidential election in November, only to have the results annulled by the Constitutional Court shortly before the second round, citing “irregularities” in his campaign amid unfounded allegations of Russian interference.
Georgescu believes that the campaign against him has “exposed” the corruption inherent in the Romanian “deep state” and claimed that the country has regressed to a state reminiscent of its Communist-era past.
“The deep state is so strong in this particular [kind] of activity,” he remarked regarding his recent arrest. He expressed his determination to “fight for our freedom and for our democracy” and called upon the US to extend its support in this endeavor.
He also argued that US backing is crucial for preserving its own image as a promoter of democracy. Georgescu warned that if democratic principles were undermined “in one country” via a “coup d’état,” it would represent a failure for the US as well.
As of now, Washington has not responded to Georgescu’s appeal. However, US officials have previously criticized Bucharest's annulment of the election results. At a recent Munich Security Conference, Vice President J.D. Vance noted that some entrenched interests in Romania were resorting to “ugly, Soviet-era words like misinformation and disinformation” to protect their stakes and block the rise of a politician offering an alternative viewpoint.
Additionally, Elon Musk criticized Georgescu's arrest on Wednesday, labeling the action as “messed up.”
Georgescu is recognized for his skepticism regarding Western influence in Romania, frequently criticizing both NATO and the EU. He has also promised to discontinue Romania’s military aid to Kiev if he is elected.
