The Democrats have convened in Chicago to officially nominate U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris as their presidential candidate.
Pro-Palestine demonstrators have dismantled part of the metal security fence outside the venue for the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Chicago, where U.S. President Joe Biden is set to address attendees on Monday night.
High-ranking Democrats have assembled in Illinois for a four-day event, culminating in the formal nomination of Vice President Harris as the party's candidate for the 2024 presidential election.
The protesters marched to the Union Center in Chicago, calling on Biden to cut military aid to Israel and urging him to apply pressure on the Israeli government to end the ongoing conflict with Hamas in Gaza. They breached the fence on the north side of the Union Center and confronted police officers blocking their way.
Footage from the scene captures activists pushing down a section of the fence and clashing with officers who attempted to stop them. Several individuals have been detained.
"4 protestors have been arrested outside of the DNC. An ANTIFA member immediately breaks down the gate as another protestor shouts, 'we can save her,' referring to one of the arrested protesters."
The police quickly intervened to disperse the demonstrators.
Pro-Palestinian activists have been organizing protests across the U.S. since the onset of the war in Gaza in October 2023. They have consistently disrupted events and heckled American politicians.

Biden suspended his presidential campaign last month, following pressure from fellow Democrats and party donors who expressed concern that his declining health could jeopardize his chances against Republican candidate Donald Trump in November. Subsequently, Biden named Harris as his successor.
