PowerChina Seeks to Expand Its Presence in the Caribbean
PowerChina is looking to expand its presence in the Caribbean region.
He Yuxin, executive vice president of the international construction group PowerChina, has announced that discussions with the Jamaican Government are "far-advanced" regarding the establishment of a presence in Jamaica and the broader Caribbean region.
During a recent press briefing at PowerChina's headquarters in Beijing, He responded to inquiries from Our Today and conveyed a positive outlook for new energy initiatives in Jamaica. He emphasized the potential for these projects to support a carbon-neutral agenda and significantly bolster the nation's energy security.
“Jamaica is the first Caribbean country where we established [a] representative office. In recent years, we have attached more importance to new energy developments in Jamaica and have gained meaningful progress so far,” He stated.
He further noted, “Since 2009, we have been pursuing projects such as Harmony Cove Hotel [and the] Mahogany Vale Hydropower Project, which are seemingly becoming more feasible under the Belt and Road Initiative.”
PowerChina, recognized as the top firm among the "Top 150 Global Design Firms" by the New York-based publication Engineering News-Record, is a multi-faceted conglomerate involved in investment and financing, engineering construction, planning design, as well as equipment manufacturing and operation management. Their focus lies on green and low-carbon energy, water resources, environmental construction, and infrastructure.
Having established a strong presence across Latin America—from Mexico and Cuba in the north to Argentina in the south—He indicated that PowerChina is taking significant steps to solidify its footprint in the English-speaking Caribbean.
The company's Americas sub-region subsidiary, based in Panama, has emerged as a leader in clean, low-energy production solutions and is one of the largest entities specializing in hydropower, thermoelectric power, photovoltaic energy, transportation infrastructure, water treatment plants, mining, and affordable housing.
PowerChina first explored the Caribbean through a multi-island tour in 2013 and has previously undertaken medium-scale projects in Belize, Guyana, Suriname, and Trinidad.
“As for the Caribbean, we have restructured our strategy since the end of last year. Now, an executive vice president of PowerChina Americas is specifically assigned to be responsible for overall management of overseas business in the sub-region, and more resources will be deployed there. We believe you will hear more and more good news about the region from PowerChina,” the senior executive commented.
