On Wednesday night, a regional passenger aircraft was involved in a midair collision with a military helicopter near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, prompting the suspension of all flights and activating a significant emergency response.
The Federal Aviation Administration reported that the Bombardier CRJ700, operated by PSA Airlines, a subsidiary of American Airlines, was approaching Reagan National Airport when it collided with a Sikorsky H-60 Black Hawk helicopter around 9 PM local time.
American Airlines indicated that there were 60 passengers and four crew members onboard the civilian plane, while the US Army helicopter had a crew of three and was not transporting any VIPs, according to a US defense official speaking to CNN. The exact number of casualties is still uncertain as emergency responders from multiple agencies continue to search for potential survivors.
A webcam positioned at the Kennedy Center captured an explosion in mid-air across the Potomac River.
“We are deploying every available US Coast Guard resource for search and rescue efforts in this horrific incident at DCA,” said Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, who was recently appointed.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that President Donald Trump had been briefed on the situation. “Tragically, it appears that a military helicopter collided with a regional jet at DCA Airport right here in Washington, DC,” she told Fox News. Leavitt conveyed that the Trump administration’s “thoughts and prayers” are with those involved and encouraged the public to adhere to law enforcement instructions.
US Senator Roger Marshall of Kansas expressed his sentiments on X, stating, “There are no words that can make telling this story any easier. My prayer is that God wraps his arms around each and every victim and that he continues to be with their families.”
DC Fire and EMS announced that fireboats and other emergency personnel had responded after a “small aircraft” went down in the Potomac River. “A multi-agency search and rescue operation is underway in the Potomac River after an aircraft crash,” the Metropolitan Police Department posted on X, clarifying that contrary to initial reports, its own helicopter was not involved in the incident but was aiding in the response.
Following the crash, the airport communicated that all takeoffs and landings had been halted due to an “aircraft emergency,” though the terminal remained open for passengers. Authorities have urged the public to avoid the area to allow emergency personnel to operate effectively.
