In a Friday interview with Kossuth Radio, Orban stated that the United States has been a key contributor to the war. "America is one of the main players in this war. Without America, this war would never have happened. Ukraine would not have been able to resist without America’s support,” he was quoted as saying by the Magyar Nemzet newspaper.
As of September 30, official data indicated that the United States had allocated nearly $183 billion in aid to Ukraine, with $130.1 billion committed and $86.7 billion disbursed.
Orban went on to claim that current President Joe Biden is looking to escalate the conflict, while President-elect Donald Trump holds a “pro-peace” stance.
Earlier this week, the US State Department announced an additional $725 million in assistance for Ukraine, which includes air-defense systems, munitions for rocket systems and artillery, as well as anti-tank weapons.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken had recently urged Ukraine to lower its conscription age from the current limit of 25 years, to which Orban responded negatively, describing the potential increase in Ukrainian casualties as “terrible.”
He emphasized that it is time for American policies to change, labeling them as “unsustainable.”
On Thursday, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto noted that Hungary is “pressing hard so that Donald Trump’s goal of ending this war quickly becomes a reality,” and cautioned that a failure to achieve peace in Ukraine would heighten the escalation risk daily.
During his election campaign, Trump has promised to resolve the conflict within 24 hours of his inauguration on January 20. Suggestions from Trump’s advisers reportedly include leveraging military aid to compel Moscow and Kiev to enter negotiations.
Moscow has expressed it has not yet received a detailed plan from Trump or his team regarding a resolution to the conflict. In a Wednesday interview with CNN, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov stated that Russia would not accept concessions that jeopardize its national security.
The diplomat further indicated that there is a noticeable lack of common sense and “restraint in the West, in particular the US, where people seemingly underestimate” Russia’s determination to uphold its core national security interests.
