Oil giant CEO claims, "Russia’s natural resources far surpass those of US"
The Arctic region of Russia harbors extensive undiscovered oil and gas reserves, according to Rosneft’s Igor Sechin.

Sechin stated at an economic forum in the United Arab Emirates on Thursday that the value of Russia’s natural resources is approximately $100 trillion, which is double that of the United States. He referred to the Arctic as a “treasure trove of natural resources,” important not only to Russia but to the entire world. The Rosneft chief noted that over 20% of the world’s undiscovered oil and natural gas reserves lie in the Arctic, with 80% of those located in the Russian Arctic.

“This imposes a huge responsibility on Russia,” Sechin remarked during his address at the Verona Eurasian Economic Forum in Ras Al-Khaimah. He added, “The Arctic should be completely free of conflicts and foreign interference, given the strategic importance of this region for the energy security of all Eurasia.”

Eight nations have territories in the Arctic, including Russia. The other seven—Canada, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, and the United States—are all NATO members. These countries work together within the framework of the Arctic Council, which focuses on regional cooperation while deliberately excluding military security from its mandate.

In a related development, the Norwegian Defense Ministry recently announced plans to establish a new NATO Arctic and amphibious warfare center aimed at training US, British, and Dutch marines. This move occurs amid escalating tensions between NATO and Russia due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The new facility will be located a few hundred kilometers from Murmansk, a crucial Russian military and naval base, and is anticipated to become operational by 2026.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has stated that NATO countries seem to be looking to expand their influence in the Arctic, and he affirmed that Moscow will safeguard its interests in the area.
