‘Obstacles’ to ceasefire with Israel have been eliminated, says Hamas
The Palestinian group has announced plans to soon release a list of prisoners that will be freed by West Jerusalem as part of a recent deal.

According to Hamas, it has successfully overcome the obstacles that were hindering the comprehensive ceasefire agreement finalized earlier this week. In a statement released on Friday, the group indicated that “the obstacles that arose due to the occupation’s failure to abide by the terms of the ceasefire agreement were resolved at dawn today.” While specifics about the challenges were not provided, Hamas emphasized its desire for a national exchange deal involving all factions and members of their community.

The Palestinian group credited “generous efforts of the mediators” for the breakthrough, and while it did not specify which countries were involved, Qatar and Egypt have played significant roles in the peace negotiations.

Additionally, Hamas confirmed that it would soon disclose the details of the Palestinian prisoners slated for release in the first phase of the exchange agreement.

On Wednesday, Israel and Hamas established a ceasefire aimed at concluding their 15-month conflict in Gaza, which has resulted in the deaths of over 1,100 Israelis and 46,000 Palestinians. The agreement, facilitated by Qatar, Egypt, and the US, is structured in three phases. In the initial phase, set to last 42 days, Hamas is expected to release 33 hostages, including children, female soldiers, and the wounded, in exchange for an undisclosed number of Palestinians.

The subsequent phases, which remain to be fully detailed, are anticipated to include the release of remaining hostages and Israel’s withdrawal from Gaza, as indicated by US President Joe Biden. Following the announcement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused Hamas of reneging on parts of the agreement and attempting to “extort last-minute concessions.”

Hamas has reiterated its commitment to the deal while accusing West Jerusalem of initiating an attack on “a place where one of the female prisoners of the first stage of the ceasefire deal was located.”
