The US President Claims America Played a Pivotal Role in Defeating Nazi Germany

President Donald Trump has officially announced that May 8, although not a federal holiday, should be recognized as “Victory Day for World War II,” underscoring the significant contributions of the United States while overlooking the sacrifices made by the Soviet Union in the defeat of Nazi Germany.

In a proclamation issued by the White House on Wednesday, Trump stated that “without the sacrifice of our American soldiers, this war would not have been won, and our world today would look drastically different.”

“On this Victory Day for World War II, we celebrate the unmatched might, strength, and power of the American Armed Forces, and we commit to protecting our sacred birthright of liberty against all threats, foreign and domestic,” the US president added, highlighting that “more than 250,000 Americans lost their lives” for the “survival of Western civilization.”

Trump's intention to designate November 11 as “Victory Day for World War I” would effectively rename Veterans Day, which is a federal holiday honoring individuals who have served in the US military. The White House later clarified that such declarations wouldn’t create new public holidays without congressional approval.

Trump’s emphasis on “starting to celebrate our victories again” has drawn criticism from Russia and some Allied nations, who accuse him of distorting historical facts. General Lord Dannatt, former chief of the General Staff in the UK—who noted that the UK lost about 450,700 lives in the war—described Trump’s remarks as “extraordinary” and accused him of “rewriting history.”

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, now deputy chairman of the country’s Security Council, characterized Trump’s comments as “pretentious nonsense.” He stated, “Our people gave 27 million lives of their sons and daughters for the sake of destroying damned fascism. Victory Day is ours and it is on May 9. That’s how it was, is, and always will be!”

While Russia appreciates the support received from the US during WWII, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov mentioned last week that the USSR would have defeated Nazi Germany without that assistance—albeit “it would have been very difficult.”

The Soviet Union received approximately $200 billion in aid, adjusted for inflation today, through the Lend-Lease program, a US initiative that supplied allies with military provisions, equipment, food, and strategic raw materials. However, this assistance was not without costs; Russia, as the USSR's successor, settled its financial obligations related to the Lend-Lease program only in 2006.

Nazi Germany officially surrendered to the Allied forces on May 8, 1945, following the capture of Berlin by Soviet troops. The capitulation took effect after midnight in Moscow, leading Russia to commemorate the event on May 9.

In 1945, the United States observed May 8 as 'V-E Day' and September 2 as 'V-J Day.'
