China accuses the CIA of 'provocation'
The US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has come under fire from Beijing for its recent release of recruitment videos aimed at Chinese officials. The Chinese government has labeled this move a “political provocation.”

At a press conference on Tuesday, Lin Jian, a spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry, criticized the US for its tactics, claiming that it has "long been using all kinds of despicable methods to steal other countries’ secrets, interfere in their internal affairs and commit subversion."

Lin further asserted that these actions violate “international law and basic norms governing international relations.” He added, “The US not only maliciously smears and attacks China, but also blatantly attempts to lure Chinese personnel, even government officials, to be their informants.” He vowed that Beijing would “take all measures necessary to resolutely push back infiltration and sabotage activities from overseas and defend national sovereignty, security and development interest.”

The CIA's recruitment videos, released last Thursday, are intended to attract individuals in China who can provide information about “economic, fiscal, or trade policies” or who are involved in the “defense industry… national security, diplomacy, science [or] advanced technology.” The agency has assured potential informants that their identities will be safeguarded, providing guidance on how to make contact securely.

Furthermore, this incident reflects a wider trend, as last month, Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service launched a similar campaign targeting CIA agents with an advertisement named ‘Your Option: Together for the Truth.’ This piece referenced the historical cooperation between the US and USSR during World War II, urging CIA staff to collaborate in addressing the Ukraine situation and condemning the authorities in Kiev for perceived neo-Nazi affiliations and corruption.

This sequence of events followed a March initiative where the CIA reached out to Russian military engineers through its own recruitment video. The US spy agency has previously produced a variety of recruitment materials targeting different ethnic and social groups in Russia.
