North Korea asserts latest ICBM launch achieved unprecedented record
North Korea's leader, Kim Jong-un, has asserted that the recent launch of a Hwasongpho-19 intercontinental ballistic missile was intended as a message to potential adversaries. He emphasized that the successful launch serves as a testament to the country's advancements in missile technology.

On Friday, the state-run Korean Central News Agency reported that the missile reached an altitude of nearly 7,700 kilometers and traveled over 1,000 kilometers, ultimately landing in a designated area in the Sea of Japan.

The report stated that the ICBM test "updated the recent records of the strategic missile capability of the DPRK" and clarified that it posed no threat to the security of neighboring countries.

Kim, citing "ever-aggravating" threats from rivals, underscored the need for ongoing development of “modern strategic attack forces." He declared that this test was a justified military response aimed at informing rivals who have exacerbated tensions and threatened the security of North Korea.

The North Korean leader criticized unnamed nations for tightening "their nuclear alliance" and engaging in "various adventuristic military maneuvers." The KCNA noted that the missile launch marked an “epochal milestone in perpetuating the absolute superiority of the strategic armed forces of the DPRK.” The latest show of military strength was intended to “strike terror” into adversaries and deter any inclination toward war with North Korea.

It was reported that Kim personally ordered the launch and observed the test.

During a press briefing on Thursday, Japan’s chief cabinet secretary, Yoshimasa Hayashi, estimated that “depending on the weight of the warhead, the [North Korean missile’s] range could exceed 15,000km,” suggesting it could potentially reach the US mainland.

In response to the test, the US Indo-Pacific Command condemned North Korea's actions, urging the nation “to refrain from further unlawful and destabilizing acts.”

Despite North Korea frequently conducting missile tests, ICBM launches remain infrequent, with the last one occurring in December.

North Korea has consistently criticized joint military exercises between the US and South Korea, labeling them as preparations for potential aggression. Relations between Seoul and Pyongyang have deteriorated further in recent months due to accusations involving garbage and propaganda leaflet drops from drones and hot air balloons.
