New York Police Ready for 'Heightened Threat' During New Year's Eve Celebrations
The NYPD commissioner has announced a commitment to providing a “tremendous amount of police resources” for Tuesday night.

As the New Year’s Eve celebrations approach, the New York Police Department has deployed drones, bomb squads, and hundreds of additional officers to ensure safety. The commissioner indicated that officers are operating with heightened vigilance.

During a press conference on Monday, Commissioner Jessica Tisch noted that although there are no credible threats to the Times Square New Year’s event, the NYPD has maintained a high level of alert since October, a status that will remain in effect through Tuesday night.

In early October, Tisch declared a “heightened threat environment” in anticipation of the one-year anniversary of the Hamas attack on Israel, even acknowledging that there were no specific threats associated with the Palestinian militants or their supporters.

”We remain vigilant,” Tisch stated to reporters. “The public can expect to see a tremendous amount of police resources deployed throughout the area and across the city. That includes members of some of our elite specialized units.”

The NYPD plans to deploy 600 newly-qualified officers along with K-9 teams featuring bomb-sniffing dogs, helicopters, drones, and water units, according to the commissioner. They have also implemented measures to prevent vehicle ramming attacks, similar to the tragic incident that took place in December at a Christmas market in Magdeburg, Germany.

”Every year we formulate our plan based on incidents that are happening around the world,” said the NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Intelligence and Counterterrorism at Monday’s press conference. “Christmas markets…they’re a persistent, high-risk target, and so, frankly, are New Year’s Eve celebrations around the world.”

Over a million visitors are anticipated to gather in Times Square and nearby areas to witness the iconic crystal ball drop at midnight. To prepare for the influx of people, NYPD officers have taken steps such as welding manhole covers shut and removing mailboxes, vending machines, and garbage cans, Tisch explained.

In Europe, similar heightened security measures have been initiated, with authorities deploying 3,000 additional police officers in Berlin and mobilizing 10,000 police and military personnel in Paris.
