During a joint press conference with Netanyahu, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that “the US will take over the Gaza Strip,” aiming to level the buildings destroyed in the conflict between Israel and Hamas, and envisioning the area as the “Riviera of the Middle East.” When pressed by reporters about the possibility of deploying U.S. troops to Gaza, Trump remarked he would “do what is necessary.”
In a live interview on Fox News with Sean Hannity, Netanyahu addressed speculation in the American media concerning Trump's intentions for U.S. control over Gaza. He clarified, “Well, I don’t think he talked about sending US troops to complete the job of destroying Hamas,” underscoring, “That’s our commitment, our job, and we’re absolutely committed to it.”
Netanyahu expressed skepticism regarding any notion that Trump would expect the U.S. to fund Gaza’s reconstruction, suggesting instead that “Neighboring states, wealthy states would do it.”
Trump also proposed the relocation of Palestinians to nearby countries, suggesting it should be at the cost of “neighboring countries of great wealth.”
Following Trump’s statements, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt later stated that the U.S. is “not going to pay for the rebuilding of Gaza” but will collaborate with regional partners on reconstruction. She clarified that Trump had not committed to sending U.S. troops into the enclave.
Despite facing international backlash, Netanyahu commended Trump's proposal as “remarkable.” During his discussion with Hannity, he conveyed that the intent was merely to allow Gazans who wish to leave the territory the opportunity to do so, arguing, “I mean, what’s wrong with that? They can leave, they can then come back, they can relocate and come back…”
Trump’s proposals regarding Gaza have sparked significant condemnation, with global leaders and humanitarian organizations cautioning about potential repercussions for regional stability and the rights of Palestinians. Numerous countries, including key U.S. allies in both the Middle East and Europe, have strongly opposed any forced displacement of Palestinians or drastic changes to Gaza without Palestinian agreement, arguing that such actions could exacerbate the humanitarian crisis and further destabilize the area.
