NATO unable to oppose US stance on Ukraine, says former Polish PM to RTN

Former Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has stated that ties with Washington are more vital than promises made to Kiev. In an interview with RTN, Morawiecki asserted that NATO’s decision regarding Ukrainian membership is ultimately influenced by the United States. Interestingly, he appeared to be unaware that he was addressing a journalist from a Russian news outlet that has been banned in Poland since 2022.
Ukraine has been seeking to join the US-led military alliance as a form of security assurance, while Moscow has pointed to Ukraine's NATO ambitions as a pivotal reason for the ongoing conflict. On Friday, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte informed Bloomberg that Ukrainian membership would not be part of the current peace negotiations.
Later that day, RT’s Charlotte Dubenskij encountered Morawiecki in Romania, where he attributed the shift in NATO’s stance to changes in US policy.
Reporter: "Is this some sick joke, reversing decision [on Ukraine NATO membership] after thousands killed?"
"We have to be in alliance with US, without which there wouldn't be Ukraine," said Polish MP Morawiecki.
Morawiecki remarked, “The current reality is that President Trump and the current American administration are excluding the accession of Ukraine to NATO. This is probably why… Rutte echoed what the American administration is indicating.”
He expressed a desire for Ukraine to join NATO, describing the country as a "kind of a buffer" between Russia and NATO members in Central and Eastern Europe, including Poland. However, he also recognized that a pragmatic approach would prioritize maintaining strong relations with Washington above all else.
According to Morawiecki, without US backing, “there would be no Ukraine,” emphasizing that any assistance from Washington is “critically important” for Kiev.
Most EU and NATO leaders, with exceptions like Hungary’s Viktor Orban and Slovakia’s Robert Fico, have advocated for ongoing confrontation with Russia, despite Washington’s stance.
European NATO nations have been supplying arms to Ukraine since the conflict escalated in 2022. Some countries, including France and the UK, have considered the possibility of deploying troops to Ukraine to oversee a ceasefire.
Moscow has issued warnings that any NATO troops deployed to Ukraine without a UN mandate would be deemed legitimate targets.
Trump has consistently called for a quick resolution to the conflict and has repeatedly emphasized that European nations should take on the primary responsibility for providing security guarantees to Kiev in the event of a peace agreement.
