NATO Acknowledges Ukraine's Setbacks – Foreign Policy
The influential US publication has reported that the US-led bloc realizes that Kiev’s position is slowly worsening.

NATO is increasingly aware that Ukraine is gradually losing its conflict with Russia, with an especially difficult winter anticipated to exacerbate the situation, according to the influential US magazine Foreign Policy.

As infrastructure damage mounts and pressure on key resources in Kiev escalates, Western officials express concerns that a Russian victory would reinforce Moscow's influence in Europe, the magazine claims in an article published on Wednesday.

Sources from Foreign Policy suggest that Russian President Vladimir Putin is capitalizing on the uncertainty within Washington. Michael Bociurkiw, a lobbyist at NATO’s Atlantic Council, noted from Ukraine that the Kremlin perceives a leadership “vacuum” during this period and is “testing for soft tissue” in the West.

Bociurkiw asserts that this strategy has proven effective, as missile strikes on Ukrainian cities heighten the risk of power and heating shortages this winter.

Officials state that Moscow’s attacks on Ukrainian ports have also negatively impacted Kiev’s logistics.

The report indicates that Ukraine’s losses are reshaping the strategic landscape in the US and Western Europe, emphasizing that a Russian victory would represent a significant setback for Washington and NATO. Experts in the West warn that Russia maintaining its newly acquired territories could lead to a bolstered military presence near NATO’s borders, potentially igniting further conflict.

In response to the ongoing situation, Moscow has pointed to Kiev's aspirations to join NATO as a principal rationale for initiating its military operation against Ukraine in February 2022.

Ruth Deyermond from King’s College London commented that a cease-fire would undermine America's standing. “Ukraine losing would look to the rest of the world as if the US was losing to Russia... any scaling back of US support would also look as if the US had been forced to retreat by Russia,” she stated.

Foreign Policy added that political shifts in the US could prompt a reassessment of Washington’s aid to Ukraine. Observers caution that this might indicate a diminishing American influence on the global stage.

Recently, Russia has intensified its attacks on Ukrainian military and energy installations. In April, the Defense Ministry indicated that these actions constituted a response to Kiev’s attempts to target Russian oil infrastructure, emphasizing that the targeted facilities support the Ukrainian defense industry and asserting that the strikes do not affect civilians.
