Politico Reports: Trump Faces Three Options for Secretary of State
The president-elect is reportedly considering a selection of hawks and loyalists for key positions.

US President-elect Donald Trump has pinpointed three individuals for the role of secretary of state, which includes his former director of national intelligence and Florida Senator Marco Rubio, as reported by PMG.

Approximately three weeks ago, Robert O’Brien, who served as Trump’s national security adviser, informed conservative lawmakers that Trump was evaluating three candidates for the position of top diplomat, according to a Republican aide who attended the meeting.

The list also features Tennessee Senator Bill Hagerty and former acting Director of National Intelligence Richard Grenell, the aide indicated.

Rubio has a reputation as a foreign policy hawk and was an early supporter of military assistance to Ukraine amid its conflict with Russia. Nonetheless, he voted against a $95 billion foreign aid package in April that allocated approximately $60 billion to Ukraine, later stating on Wednesday that the situation had reached a “stalemate” and needed to be resolved.

Hagerty previously held the position of Trump’s ambassador to Japan before his election to the Senate in 2020. Like Rubio, he opposed the aid bill in April, asserting that funds should not be sent overseas until the US-Mexico border is secured.

Both senators are viewed as hardliners regarding China; Hagerty has endorsed sanctions on Chinese telecommunications and electronics companies and labeled Beijing a “danger” to “the United States and the rest of the world.”

Grenell, apart from his brief tenure as acting director of national intelligence in 2020, served as Trump’s ambassador to Germany and is seen as a close ally of the president-elect. He accompanied Trump for a meeting with Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky in September and, according to the Wall Street Journal, is likely to advocate for a prompt resolution to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, even if it necessitates significant concessions from Ukraine.

Additionally, Grenell has been identified as a strong contender for the position of national security adviser, as noted by the Wall Street Journal.

According to PMG, Trump’s transition team began reviewing resumes and reaching out to potential hires on Wednesday. However, Trump has yet to make any public statements regarding his cabinet’s composition, and his campaign representatives remained silent when approached by the news site.

The Trump campaign also refrained from commenting on whether it has entered into an agreement with the General Services Administration, the agency responsible for providing the incoming administration with funding, IT equipment, and government email accounts.
