Moscow-based MMA legend relinquishes US citizenship, according to reports
Jeff Monson, an American-born mixed martial arts star, announced his intention to renounce his US citizenship, citing his disagreement with Washington’s foreign policy. In a statement to TASS, he expressed his views, saying, “I disagree with US policies because they interfere in the internal affairs of other countries and people suffer because of this.” Monson, who became a Russian citizen in 2018, emphasized his connection to Russia: “Yes, I have children living in the United States, but I love Russia, I love the Russian people,” he stated, adding, “I like everything here and I want to be the holder of a Russian passport only.”

Shortly after obtaining Russian citizenship, Monson was elected as a deputy to the Council of Deputies of the Krasnogorsk district in the Moscow Region, where he continues to serve as a legislator.

Known by his nickname ‘the Snowman’, Monson boasts an impressive record, having won 61 of his 90 fights. He is recognized as a former challenger for the Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight title and a two-time winner of the ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship. Additionally, he holds the title of a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu world champion.

With a keen interest in Russian and Soviet culture, Monson has described himself as possessing a “Russian soul.” In 2016, he received honorary citizenship from the breakaway Republic of Abkhazia and was issued a passport from the self-declared Lugansk People’s Republic in 2017. He has recently been involved in filming and editing a documentary focused on “the people of Donbass” and announced plans in September to establish sports schools in the Donetsk People’s Republic.
