The remains of the former Newcastle and Chelsea footballer Christian Atsu have been confirmed found in the ruins of a high-rise apartment block in Turkey's Hatay province, as reported by his agent. Atsu had been missing following the devastating earthquakes that hit Türkiye and Syria, resulting in over 40,000 fatalities.
At the age of 31, Atsu, who joined Chelsea in 2013 under the ownership of Roman Abramovich, was declared deceased by his agent on Saturday.
“It is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to announce to all well-wishers that sadly Christian Atsu’s body was recovered this morning,” Nana Sechere tweeted.
“My deepest condolences go to his family and loved ones. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their prayers and support."
Hatayspor announced, "The funeral of our football player Christian Atsu, who lost his life under the rubble, is on his way to be sent to his hometown, Ghana. We will not forget you, Atsu. Peace be upon you, beautiful person. There are no words to describe our sadness. REST in PEACE ATSU" on February 18, 2023.
Newcastle United expressed their sorrow, stating, "We are profoundly saddened to learn that Christian Atsu has tragically lost his life in Turkey's devastating earthquakes. A talented player and a special person, he will always be fondly remembered by our players, staff and supporters. Rest in peace, Christian.
