Media suggests Trudeau might resign as Canadian PM
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is reportedly poised to resign this week, as reported by Reuters on Sunday, citing sources.

This anticipated decision comes in the wake of growing internal pressure within his ruling Liberal Party and policy disagreements with cabinet members.

According to a source who spoke to Reuters, Trudeau has not yet made a final choice regarding his leadership. The Globe and Mail previously indicated that an announcement could come as early as Monday, marking his departure as leader of the Liberal Party after a nine-year tenure.

The Canadian outlet stated that it is unclear whether Trudeau will step down immediately or remain as prime minister until a new party leader is appointed.

The Liberal Party is likely to meet this week to deliberate on the transition process.

Trudeau’s potential resignation raises significant questions about the future leadership of the Liberal Party ahead of the mandatory federal election, which must take place by late October.

Having assumed power in 2015, Trudeau has led the Liberal Party to victories in two subsequent elections in 2019 and 2021.

Throughout his initial two terms, Trudeau implemented Senate reforms, negotiated a new trade agreement with the United States, and introduced a carbon tax aimed at reducing Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions. His administration also legalized cannabis, initiated a public inquiry into missing and murdered Indigenous women, and passed legislation allowing medically assisted suicide.

Recent polling indicates the Liberals are trailing the Conservatives, under the leadership of Pierre Poilievre. With rising inflation and increasing critique of his government’s approaches, both opposition leaders and some members of his own party have urged him to refrain from pursuing a fourth term.

Trudeau’s expected resignation comes after a series of challenges to his leadership. In December, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland resigned due to disagreements over the government's fiscal policies concerning anticipated U.S. tariffs.

In November, President-elect Donald Trump announced a 25% tariff on all Canadian imports, escalating economic and political tensions.

In an effort to prevent a trade war, Trudeau visited Trump at his Mar-a-Lago estate. However, the outcome of the meeting appeared to be unfavorable for Trudeau, who was later the subject of social media mockery from Trump, who referred to him as the “governor” of Canada and suggested that Canada becoming the 51st state of the U.S. would be a “great idea.”
