Malaysia Set to Participate in BRICS Summit in Russia – PM
Malaysia is set to participate in the upcoming BRICS summit in Russia and is keenly awaiting news on its application to join the organization, as conveyed by the country's Prime Minister, Anwar Ibrahim, on Thursday.

During the plenary session of the 9th annual Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, the Prime Minister expressed that BRICS membership would enable Malaysia to “intensify engagement” with sub-regional entities and strengthen connections with key partners, notably Russia.

“In applying to join BRICS, Malaysia aims to diversify economic diplomacy and enhance collaboration,” Anwar remarked. He conveyed his gratitude to Russian President Vladimir Putin for the invitation to attend the BRICS summit taking place in Kazan from October 22 to 24.

Prior to the session, Anwar addressed Malaysian media at a press briefing, noting that being invited to the summit as a non-member signifies that Malaysia is among the nations being “prioritized” for potential membership in BRICS. He highlighted positive discussions with the leaders of India, China, President Putin, and the President of Brazil concerning Malaysia's membership bid.

Anwar first announced Malaysia's intention to join BRICS in June, expressing that his country felt “relieved” that the global order is no longer unipolar and indicating that the ascent of BRICS, particularly China, offers “a glimmer of hope that there are checks and balances in the world.”

Established in 2006 by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, BRICS welcomed South Africa into its ranks in 2010. This year, the bloc welcomed four new members: Egypt, Iran, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates, while Saudi Arabia is in the process of finalizing its accession.

During the EEF plenary session, President Putin noted that over 30 countries have expressed interest in either joining or collaborating with BRICS. He emphasized that the relationships among member states are “developing very successfully” and that new members contribute uniquely to the group's growth with their distinct cultures and rapidly evolving economies.
