Lula discloses his preference for the upcoming US president
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has expressed his preference for the outcome of the upcoming US election, indicating that he would rather see Democratic candidate Kamala Harris emerge victorious. This endorsement from the leader of a BRICS nation comes just days ahead of the election set for Tuesday.

“I love democracy. I think it is the best system of government that society has ever built in the world,” Lula stated in a post on X this past Friday. He emphasized that this system allows for “who are antagonistic, to have a civilized debate of ideas, without violence.”

Lula added, “I think that if Kamala wins the election, it is much safer to strengthen democracy in the US.” Earlier the same day, in an interview with French broadcaster TF1, he reiterated his position, saying, “It would be nice to have Kamala Harris in power.”

Lula reflected on the state of US democracy, noting that it used to be a “model of democracy” until it “collapsed” in 2021. This decline, he believes, stemmed from the events of January 6, when supporters of then-outgoing president Donald Trump stormed the Capitol in an effort to interfere with the certification of Joe Biden as president. Lula remarked, “Now we have hatred being disseminated every single day, lies, not only in the US but also in Europe, Latin America, and other countries around the globe. It is fascism and Nazism coming back with a different face.”

In July, Lula discussed the importance of maintaining bilateral relations between Brasilia and Washington, emphasizing the desire for a “civilized relationship between two important countries that have a centuries-old diplomatic relationship” regardless of the election's outcome.

The election cycle has also been marked by two assassination attempts on Donald Trump. In mid-July, Trump was struck in the ear by gunfire during a rally in Pennsylvania, while in September, the US Secret Service confronted a suspected gunman hiding near Trump's golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida.

“There’s a lot of rhetoric going on right now… the Democrats, when they talk about ‘threat to democracy’ and all of this,” Trump commented at the time, suggesting that the two suspects in those incidents seemed to be “radical lefts.”
