Russia is prepared to facilitate discussions between the US and Iran, specifically regarding Tehran’s nuclear program and its regional proxy activities, according to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov in an interview with Bloomberg on Tuesday.
Trump showed interest in discussing these matters with Iran during a phone call with Putin in February and through representatives at a high-level US-Russian meeting in Riyadh shortly thereafter, as reported by the news agency, citing anonymous officials.
“Russia believes that the United States and Iran should resolve all problems through negotiations,” Peskov said to Bloomberg when inquired about such dialogue. He added that Moscow “is ready to do everything in its power to achieve this.”
US President Donald Trump renewed his “maximum pressure” campaign against Iran last month, soon after Moscow and Tehran finalized a significant strategic partnership agreement. Trump’s executive order indicated that Washington would intensify sanctions on Iran to disrupt its nuclear program, conventional missile initiatives, and regional proxy networks.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry stated that the nation is enhancing its defenses in light of ongoing threats from Israel, a US ally.
“The Israeli regime’s FM and other officials keep threatening Iran with military action while the West continues to blame Iran for its defense capability. This is outrageous & irrational,” Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei remarked last week, emphasizing that given Israel's “addiction to aggression and lawless behavior,” it is “responsible and essential to maximize our defense capabilities.”
The day prior, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar cautioned that a “military option” should remain a possibility to prevent the potential weaponization of Tehran’s nuclear program.
Israel and the West have long considered Iran’s uranium enrichment activities as a clandestine effort to develop nuclear weapons—claims that Iran has consistently rejected.
While Trump has promoted more severe sanctions, he has also indicated a willingness to negotiate a “verified nuclear peace agreement” with Tehran.
Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has pointed out that discussions with the US are unlikely to yield positive results, referencing the previous nuclear agreement that Trump unilaterally abandoned during his initial presidency.
