This strike occurred just days after a ceasefire was established between Israel and the Lebanon-based armed group, a truce facilitated by the US and France. Since the agreement, both parties have accused one another of violations, with Israel conducting additional airstrikes in southern Lebanon on Friday.
“This strike was carried out following the identification of the transfer of weapons to Hezbollah from Syria to Lebanon, even after the ceasefire agreement,” stated the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).
The IDF has consistently alleged that Hezbollah is utilizing civilian border crossings to transport weapons intended for cross-border attacks against Israeli military personnel and civilians. The IDF has committed to “continue to act to remove any threat to the State of Israel” that contravenes the fragile ceasefire.
The ceasefire, which took effect Wednesday morning, was established to provide a permanent halt to hostilities and allow for the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon, according to US President Joe Biden. However, the IDF has indicated that its troops will remain in southern Lebanon for the foreseeable future and has advised residents against returning to their homes.
Syrian state-run SANA news agency reported on Wednesday that an Israeli airstrike resulted in the deaths of six individuals at the Lebanon border, including military personnel and a humanitarian worker. The Syrian Arab Red Crescent noted that its volunteers were among those killed in the strike.
Israeli news outlet Ynet reported that the bombardment claimed the lives of at least ten Syrian soldiers.
These strikes occurred amid an uptick in hostilities in Syria, where several militant groups, including jihadists from Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, have launched a surprise offensive in the northeastern region. The Syrian government, supported by Russian air power, is currently engaged in efforts to expel HTS from areas in Aleppo, Syria's largest city.
