Central American Nation Cuts Ties with Israel
Nicaragua has officially terminated its diplomatic relations with Israel, accusing the country of "genocide" and military aggression towards the Palestinian people.

A resolution passed by the National Assembly on Friday declared this break in relations a reaction to the “brutal genocide that the fascist and war criminal government of Israel continues to commit against the Palestinian people.”

President Daniel Ortega has directed the Foreign Ministry to "abide" by the parliament's decision to sever ties with Israel, as stated by Vice President Rosario Murillo.

The lawmakers indicated that the conflict initiated by Israel in Gaza has extended to neighboring nations, including Lebanon and Syria, raising concerns about the potential for a direct confrontation with Iran. Their resolution underscores Nicaragua's solidarity with the Palestinian people and their fight for freedom and self-determination.

The resolution further expressed, “We respect the Israeli people who demand the cessation of this massacre, barbarism, and crimes committed by the nefarious Zionist government and army,” characterizing the Israeli government as “an enemy of humanity, which intends to spread its barbarism throughout the Middle East, endangering world peace and security.”

Israel commenced its military operations in Gaza last year after Hamas militants attacked the border, resulting in approximately 1,100 Israeli deaths and more than 200 hostages taken. The Israeli Defense Forces' bombing and ground campaigns have led to devastation in Gaza, with over 42,000 Palestinians reported dead according to the Gaza Health Ministry.

In solidarity with Gaza, Hezbollah launched attacks on Israel soon after the military actions began in October 2023. Israeli strikes have since intensified, claiming the lives of over 2,000 individuals.

During the week, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the Lebanese populace, urging them to “free your country from Hezbollah so that this war can end,” warning that inaction could plunge Lebanon “into the abyss of a long war that will lead to destruction and suffering like we see in Gaza.”

Israeli officials have also advocated for retaliatory actions against Iran's nuclear facilities and oil infrastructure following a missile response from Tehran to the deaths of Hamas and Hezbollah leaders on October 1.
