Trump announces choice for FBI director
The US president-elect has appointed longtime ally and former adviser Kash Patel as the next director of the FBI.

If the Senate confirms the appointment, Patel will succeed Christopher Wray, whom Trump has frequently criticized, accusing him of politically motivated actions against Trump and his supporters.

“Kash is a brilliant lawyer, investigator, and ‘America First’ fighter who has spent his career exposing corruption, defending justice, and protecting the American people,” Trump stated on Truth Social on Saturday.

Trump highlighted Patel's significant contributions in addressing what he termed the "Russia Hoax," which pertains to claims of collusion between the Trump campaign and Moscow during the 2016 presidential election. He praised Patel for his exceptional work on national security and his brief tenure as chief of staff to Acting Defense Secretary Christopher Miller during Trump’s first term.

Under Patel’s leadership, the FBI will work to “end the growing crime epidemic” and confront “migrant criminal gangs,” according to Trump.

Trump has long maintained that Democrats and the Biden administration have been using the FBI and Department of Justice for politically motivated investigations, labeling it a “witch hunt.” He has also criticized Wray’s abilities.

“He knows nothing about the terrorists and other criminals pouring into our country at record levels. His only focus is destroying J6 Patriots, raiding Mar-a-Lago, and saving radical left lunatics, like the ones now in DC burning American flags and spray painting over our great national monuments,” Trump remarked about the current FBI chief on social media in July 2024.

Patel has suggested that the FBI should be divested of its intelligence-gathering duties, arguing instead for a greater emphasis on combating organized crime. He has committed to eliminating “conspirators” from government and indicated a willingness to prosecute journalists.

“We’re going to come after the people in the media who lied about American citizens who helped Joe Biden rig presidential elections,” Patel said, according to AP.
