Described as ‘Iron Wall,’ the operation aims to “eradicate terrorism” in the region, according to Netanyahu's statement. This campaign represents a continuation of Israel’s “systematic and resolute” mission to confront the “Iranian axis wherever it sends its arms,” the Prime Minister indicated.
He further noted, “This is another step towards achieving the goal we have set – strengthening security in Judea and Samaria,” referencing the Israeli administrative designation for the entire West Bank, which has been occupied by Israel since 1967.
The Israel Defense Forces also confirmed the initiation of a “counterterrorism operation” in Jenin, in conjunction with the Israeli Security Agency and the Israel Border Police.
Recent footage shared online captures numerous Israeli military vehicles advancing toward the city, and reports suggest the operation commenced with intense drone strikes in the vicinity. Local health authorities reported that at least eight Palestinians have been killed and an additional 35 wounded as the Israeli raid unfolded.
This new campaign follows shortly after Israel reached a ceasefire agreement with the Hamas group, which involved a prisoner swap. The ceasefire took effect on Sunday, halting a conflict that had persisted for approximately 15 months.
The confrontations between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip escalated after the militant group launched a surprise offensive on southern Israel in October 2023, resulting in around 1,100 fatalities during the initial attack, along with over 200 hostages taken.
In response, the Israeli military has caused widespread destruction in Gaza, with local health authorities reporting over 46,000 fatalities. The hostilities have also sparked renewed conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, as well as several long-range engagements between Iran and Israel.
