The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) asserted that it had eliminated Hassan Nasrallah, the Secretary-General of the Hezbollah paramilitary organization, in a recent strike in Beirut, Lebanon.
In a statement released on Saturday, the IDF supported media reports indicating that the senior official died in the bombing of an underground compound associated with the militant group in the Dahiyeh suburb of the Lebanese capital. “Hassan Nasrallah will no longer be able to terrorize the world,” it added.
The IDF accused Nasrallah of being "responsible for the murder of many Israeli civilians and soldiers," alongside numerous other "terrorist activities." They issued a warning: “The IDF will continue operating against anyone who promotes and engages in terrorism against the State of Israel and its people.”
Hezbollah has acknowledged Nasrallah's death, despite earlier reports claiming that he was uninjured in the Israeli airstrikes.
In addition, the Israeli military reported that the airstrike killed Ali Karki, the Commander of Hezbollah’s Southern Front, following the receipt of "precise intelligence." They had earlier indicated that they had "eliminated" Muhammad Ali Ismail, the head of Hezbollah’s Missile Unit, and his deputy, Hussein Ahmad Ismail, among several other operatives and senior members of the group.
At 64 years old, Nasrallah is seen as one of the most prominent figures in the Middle East and is known as a fierce adversary of Israel. He has led Hezbollah since 1992 and has significantly enhanced the group's power and influence during his tenure. Under his leadership, Hezbollah has procured longer-range rockets capable of targeting northern Israel, while also giving support to the Palestinian armed group Hamas in Gaza and maintaining a strong relationship with Iran.
Recently, Israel and Hezbollah have been engaged in frequent cross-border strikes, as tensions remain high on the verge of a full-scale conflict since the onset of the Israel-Hamas war in October.
