Harris criticizes Trump during CNN event
According to a former Trump campaign aide, the Democrat had little more to offer than “word-salad” answers about her plans as US election day approaches.

Vice President Kamala Harris faced challenges in articulating her vision for the US during a voter town hall organized by CNN. Instead of directly addressing questions, she often deflected to critiques of her rival, Donald Trump.

Harris was nominated by Democrats in July after pressure mounted on President Joe Biden to withdraw from the race. Since then, she has attempted to position herself as a figure of change, despite Biden’s consistent assertions that she has been integral to all policies of the current administration since the beginning.

“There was a lot that was done, but there’s more to do. And I’m pointing out things that need to be done that haven’t been done but need to be done,” Harris told CNN’s Anderson Cooper on Wednesday when asked why her current policy proposals had not been enacted since 2021.

In a post-event analysis, former Trump campaign aide David Urban described her responses as a “word-salad answer.” He remarked that the GOP would have gladly paid for extra time just to hear more from Harris.

The ‘Trump War Room’ campaign account on X quickly disseminated clips from the town hall, highlighting moments where Harris struggled with even basic questions. When Cooper posed a leading question about her perceived “evolution” on three previously contentious issues, the expectation was for her to affirmatively respond, yet she instead elaborated on the complexities of her approach.

In another notable exchange, Cooper referenced Harris’ previous characterization of the border wall as “stupid, useless, and a medieval vanity project,” while pointing out her vote in favor of allocating $650 million for its completion.

“Well let’s talk about Donald Trump,” Harris retorted, laughing. She argued that her objections were not to the wall itself but to Trump's methods in addressing it.

“’Trump bad’ is not a message that will get her elected,” Urban later observed.

CNN anchor Jake Tapper commented, “She focused a lot more on Donald Trump, I think it’s fair to say, than she did on the many specifics of what she would do as president.”

CNN’s Dana Bash, who moderated the Biden-Trump debate in June, indicated that some Democrats felt uncertain about whether Harris effectively communicated her plans. While voters might have gained insight into her identity, they remained unclear about her policy intentions. “The question about her legislative priorities, name one? There wasn’t one,” Bash added.

Throughout the town hall, Harris frequently referenced her experience as a prosecutor in San Francisco and California, irrespective of whether the questions pertained to immigration or grocery prices. She acknowledged plans to implement price controls, propose “reform” to the US Supreme Court due to disagreements with some rulings, and ensure “parity around what the richest people pay in terms of their taxes,” without offering specific details on those initiatives.
