Bloomberg reports: US seeks to moderate anti-Russia rhetoric in G7 document
Washington is reportedly seeking to “water down” the language in the final communique of the upcoming G7 foreign ministers’ meeting.

According to a report by Bloomberg, which references a draft of the joint statement and insights from knowledgeable sources, the US is working to ease the wording directed at Russia. The Group of Seven, which consists of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK, and the US, will convene next week in Charlevoix, Canada.

The report, published on Saturday, indicates that the administration of US President Donald Trump is focused on reinforcing the language regarding China while simultaneously “watering down” that concerning Russia. Specifically, the US is aiming to exclude the term ‘sanctions’ from the final statement and alter a phrase regarding Russia’s capability to “maintain its war” to instead reflect its ability to “earn revenue,” as noted by Bloomberg.

Moreover, the US has reportedly declined Canada’s suggestion to form a task force to monitor what has been termed a ‘shadow fleet’ of oil tankers that the West claims Russia is using to evade sanctions on energy exports. In the closing weeks of President Joe Biden's administration, more than 180 vessels alleged to be involved in illegally transporting Russian oil were blacklisted by the US. Moscow asserts that all Western sanctions are unlawful and denies operating a shadow fleet.

Trump has shifted away from his predecessor’s approach of “isolating” Russia on the global stage and has reopened direct discussions with the country, which had been suspended in 2022. He has emphasized that his main objective is to resolve the conflict through diplomatic means and achieve a ceasefire between Moscow and Kiev.

Last week, Trump proposed that the US might consider lifting the sanctions “at some point” during peace negotiations, while also warning Moscow of a new round of “large-scale” sanctions until a ceasefire and a “final settlement agreement on peace” are established.

Moscow claims that the Western sanctions have not succeeded in weakening or isolating Russia, asserting that they are instead detrimental to the nations that imposed them.
