Erdogan noted that nearly a million Lebanese civilians have been forced to flee their homes due to Israeli attacks, following a cabinet meeting in Ankara. According to Lebanese authorities, over 1,300 people have lost their lives in just over a week.
“Standing up for Palestine and Lebanon means standing up for humanity, for peace, for the culture of coexistence of different faiths,” the Turkish leader stated.
He emphasized that in the case of Gaza, the UN General Assembly should promptly invoke its authority to recommend the use of force, referencing the 1950 ‘Uniting for Peace’ resolution. This resolution allows the UN to propose collective measures, including armed force, if the Security Council fails to maintain international peace.
Erdogan accused a “handful of radical Zionist extremists” of igniting conflict, declaring that the international community and the Islamic world should “take action for the peace of everyone in our region, Muslims, Jews and Christians alike.”
Earlier this year, Türkiye severed trade ties with Israel and committed to continuing the boycott until humanitarian aid can fully flow into Gaza. Ankara is also collaborating with South Africa on an ongoing case against Israel in the International Court of Justice, which alleges that the Jewish state is committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.
Israel initiated its invasion of Gaza following a surprise attack by Hamas and allied Palestinian groups on October 7, 2023, which resulted in approximately 1,200 Israeli fatalities and the taking of more than 200 hostages. Since the outbreak of conflict, over 41,000 Palestinians have reportedly died, according to authorities in Gaza.
In response to Hezbollah’s ongoing rocket and mortar attacks, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have recently intensified airstrikes against the group in Lebanon. On Tuesday, Israel announced the commencement of “limited, localized, and targeted ground raids” against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, asserting that the operation is essential for ensuring the safety of northern Israel and facilitating the return of residents displaced by Hezbollah’s assaults.
