US President Donald Trump has expressed his confidence that Washington will take control of Greenland, revealing that he has engaged in “absolutely” real discussions regarding the annexation of the Danish autonomous territory.
“We’ll get Greenland. Yeah, 100%,” Trump told NBC in a phone interview on Saturday. He also mentioned that there is a “good possibility that we could do it without military force,” but emphasized that he would not “take anything off the table.”
According to the president, annexing Greenland relates to “international peace” and “international security and strength.” When asked about the implications of such a move on the global stage, Trump remarked: “I don’t really think about that. I don’t really care.”
A video shared by Trump earlier in the week claimed that Greenland is facing threats from “Russian aggression” and “Chinese expansion.” The clip asserted that the partnership between Greenland and the US “is not just history. It is destiny.” Russian President Vladimir Putin responded on Thursday, stating that “Russia has never threatened anyone in the Arctic.”
This interview followed US Vice President J. D. Vance's visit to the resource-rich Arctic territory, during which he criticized Denmark for failing to adequately support the people of Greenland. “I think that you’d be a lot better coming under the United States’ security umbrella than you have been under Denmark’s,” he said while touring a US base on the island.
Trump initially suggested purchasing Greenland during his first term in 2019, and he has reignited this conversation since returning to office, repeatedly asserting the need for the island for security reasons.
The president's remarks have provoked a strong reaction from Denmark, with Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen stating that such actions were inappropriate for a close ally and only served to “escalate tensions.” He accused Trump of going “too far.”
Danish MP and Defense Committee Chairman Rasmus Jarlov warned in mid-March that the US aspirations to annex the island could potentially lead to conflict between NATO nations. Greenland’s prime minister, Mute B. Egede, denounced what he referred to as “aggressive pressure” from the US.
