During a campaign rally in Lititz, Pennsylvania, on Sunday—only two days prior to the election—Trump pointed out gaps in the bullet-proof glass surrounding him, noting that some journalists positioned nearby had a clear line of sight through those spaces.
“I have this piece of glass over here, and I don’t have a piece of glass there,” Trump remarked. “But all we have really over here is the fake news, right? And to get me, somebody would have to shoot through the fake news.”
He added, “And I don’t mind that so much,” emphasizing his point by repeating, “I don’t mind. I don’t mind,” which drew laughter from the audience.
In the same rally, Trump characterized news organizations as “seriously corrupt people,” identifying ABC, CBS, and NBC as networks he particularly disdains. “The media is so damn bad. It’s unbelievable,” he expressed to his supporters.
After facing criticism online for these comments, Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung clarified that the remarks were "about threats against him that were spurred on by dangerous rhetoric from Democrats," asserting that Trump was actually suggesting that reporters covering him “should have had a glass protective shield, also.”
Earlier this year, Trump narrowly escaped an assassination attempt in July when a gunman fired shots at one of his rallies in Butler, Pennsylvania. In September, another individual was arrested for attempting to conceal a rifle at Trump’s golf course in Florida.
Trump has frequently accused media outlets of bias and of disseminating falsehoods regarding his presidency. Conversely, he has been accused of inciting violence and received criticism for referring to political opponents as an “enemy from within.”
