Reports indicate that FIFA, the governing body of world football, has no plans to suspend Israeli teams from its tournaments related to this conflict.
In May, the Palestinian Football Association submitted a proposal to suspend Israel, citing the armed conflict that has been ongoing since last October. FIFA has postponed its decision twice on this matter, the most recent postponement being in late August, when the organization announced that its executive council, located in Zurich, would conduct an assessment in early October.
An article from the Israeli sports website ONE claimed on Monday that the Israel Football Association and the national team would not face any sanctions. The article did not provide a specific source for this information.
The outlet noted that Israel benefited from the matter being handled by the FIFA Council, which consists of 37 members. It added that if the issue were brought before the FIFA Congress, the supreme legislative body with over 200 members that meets annually, “we would have no chance against the global majority, which is currently against Israel.”
Proponents of the Palestinian proposal argue that the Israeli military actions in Gaza violate FIFA’s stated objectives, justifying a punitive response from the organization. Aid groups and observers report that the conflict, which erupted following a deadly attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7 of last year, has resulted in a death toll exceeding 41,000, with estimates suggesting the actual number could be significantly higher.
In response to the report from ONE, Russian lawmaker Dmitry Svishchev commented on Tuesday, asserting that if accurate, it underscores the double standards in international sports, as Russia knows from its own experience.
“Russia, it appears, has no rights. Any action by our nation is treated as forbidden, leading to disqualification of athletes. If Israel plays in FIFA international tournaments, why can’t Russians be allowed?” he stated during an interview with the sports channel Match TV.
FIFA suspended Russian teams from its tournaments in February 2022, in reaction to the onset of the conflict in Ukraine.
