European Elites Favoring War Try to Block Peace in Ukraine, Says Hungarian Foreign Minister
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto has indicated that the prospect of resolving the conflict between Moscow and Kiev has never been closer, but he warned that pro-war factions in Europe are likely to attempt to undermine potential negotiations.

Speaking to DTV, he conveyed a cautious optimism about the possibility of peace, particularly in light of the recent discussions between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Szijjarto expressed his approval that the two leaders have agreed to meet in person soon.

“Now we can not only see the light at the end of the tunnel, but that it gets closer and shines brighter and brighter,” Szijjarto remarked, emphasizing that the chances for peace are more probable than they have been in a long time.

Nevertheless, he acknowledged that the road to peace could be challenging and flagged potential opposition from European pro-war liberal elites. He suggested that these groups would likely work hard to obstruct any agreement but expressed confidence in the ability of U.S. leadership to facilitate a deal with Russia, notwithstanding pushback from some European leaders and institutions.

“The European pro-war, liberal elite will try to do everything in its power to ensure that the peace agreement that ends the war in Ukraine is not reached, which is currently closer than ever,” the diplomat stated.

During a phone call, Putin and Trump engaged in nearly 90 minutes of conversation, marking the first known high-level dialogue between U.S. and Russian leaders since the escalation of the Ukraine crisis began in February 2022. The two leaders extended invitations to each other to visit their respective countries, agreeing to hold a preliminary meeting in a neutral location, which Trump suggested may occur in Saudi Arabia—an idea that has already gained the kingdom's approval.

“The Kingdom welcomes holding the summit in its territory and affirms its continued efforts to achieve lasting peace between Russia and Ukraine, which began since the outbreak of the Ukrainian crisis,” the Saudi government announced on Friday.
