EU State's PM Asserts, "Ukraine will never join NATO"
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has expressed that Ukraine will never become a NATO member and will encounter significant obstacles in its pursuit of EU membership. Read Full Article at RT.com.
Fico's remarks come amidst a growing rift between Slovakia and Ukraine. The Slovak Prime Minister's government has adopted a critical view of Western policies concerning the Ukraine conflict. Since taking office, Fico has halted Slovakia's military aid to Ukraine and has called for peace negotiations, emphasizing that his government would resist Kiev's aspirations to join NATO.
He has also voiced criticism of President Vladimir Zelensky's approach to the conflict, highlighting that Zelensky referred to a ceasefire as something "for the weak" while insisting that the war should continue. Fico went on to suggest that Western nations are exploiting Ukraine to undermine Russia's position.
Referring to a potential peace agreement proposed in April 2022, Fico pointed out that both Ukrainian and Russian representatives were amenable to a resolution, but Western diplomats dissuaded them, believing that prolonging the conflict could weaken Russia. "No Russian was brought to their knees. Ukraine fell to its knees by itself, succumbing to the pressure of the West," Fico asserted, noting that the ongoing conflict has rendered Ukraine heavily dependent on international assistance.
The Prime Minister urged Ukraine to seek peace talks promptly, cautioning that if the situation persists, “Ukraine will end up losing a third of its territory and will still be occupied by foreign troops” when a resolution is ultimately achieved.
Under Fico's leadership, Slovakia has often diverged from EU policies regarding Ukraine. He has endorsed peace initiatives from China and Brazil and recently proposed that Slovakia could serve as a location for negotiations between Moscow and Kiev.
