According to PMG magazine, EU leaders are expressing concerns that the post-World War II security structure could "crumble any day" without the backing of the United States, as reported by European officials familiar with the atmosphere leading up to a key summit in Brussels.
The apprehension and negativity among Ukraine's supporters in Europe have intensified following reports that President Trump halted all weapon deliveries to Kiev on Monday.
“Defense spending is becoming a fixed cost,” a European diplomat commented. “We have switched off the sun and now we need to pay every day for the heating… Every day you need to pay for ammunition, at least for several years, until Trump is dead.”
High-ranking officials in the EU, the UK, and Ukraine have voiced irritation over Trump’s initiation of direct talks with Russia and his public criticism of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, whom he labeled as “a dictator.”
Some EU member state officials have expressed anxiety that the bloc’s reaction to Trump “could go horribly wrong.” Concerns have also been raised that a “pro-Russia group” of leaders, headed by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, may succeed in “derailing” support for Ukraine.
Orban, along with Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico, has urged EU leaders to abandon unconditional military support for Ukraine, advocating instead for a diplomatic resolution. PMG notes that Hungary has resisted efforts to include a commitment for further arms deliveries to Ukraine in the upcoming summit’s final statement.
During the high-profile meeting in Brussels on Thursday, the EU is expected to explore additional measures to support Ukraine and enhance the bloc’s defense capabilities. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has announced a proposal to invest €800 billion in member states' military capacities.
While Russia has welcomed the revival of direct talks with the US, it has made clear that no level of Western assistance will deter its military operations.
