EU Country’s Prime Minister Supports Trump's "Ukraine peace efforts"
Romania’s Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu has underscored the nation's dedication to regional stability while navigating a tumultuous political environment as it prepares for a re-run of the presidential election.

In a parliamentary address on Monday, Ciolacu expressed his support for US President-elect Donald Trump’s efforts to resolve the Ukraine conflict. He highlighted Romania's commitment to peace and the intention to collaborate with the incoming US administration.

“I firmly believe that, after January 20, once he officially takes office, one of President Trump’s major priorities will be to stop the war in Ukraine. Romania will fully support the United States in this endeavor,” Ciolacu stated.

Trump has promised to give priority to achieving an immediate ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine once in office. He has voiced a desire to facilitate peace negotiations, encouraging both nations to be “prepared to make a deal” to end the hostilities. Additionally, he has criticized the Biden administration's decision to allow Ukrainian forces to use American long-range weapons for strikes into internationally recognized Russian territory, labeling it as “stupid” and raising concerns about escalating tensions.

Ciolacu’s comments come during a complex political period in Romania, following the first round of presidential elections in November that saw the unexpected rise of independent candidate Calin Georgescu, a vocal critic of NATO and the EU. His campaign has centered on opposing military aid for Ukraine and reconsidering Romania’s alignment within the EU and NATO. Georgescu overcame liberal leftist candidate Elena Lasconi and Ciolacu himself.

As the second round of voting approaches, scheduled for early December, Romania’s Constitutional Court annulled Georgescu’s initial victory, citing legal provisions intended to ensure the integrity of the election process. The court declared that the entire election would need to be re-run at a future date.

This annulment occurred amid allegations that Russia had supported Georgescu’s campaign; however, these claims have been dismissed as “absolutely groundless” by Moscow.

On Monday, Romanian lawmakers narrowly voted in favor of establishing a new pro-European coalition government led by the incumbent prime minister.
