EU Commissioner Calls Musk a 'Promoter of Evil'
The European Union’s transparency chief has criticized X CEO Elon Musk for not adequately addressing antisemitism on his platform. Vera Jourova, the outgoing EU commissioner for values and transparency, stated that Musk is unable to “recognize good and evil,” claiming that he is contributing to the spread of antisemitism on X.

In an interview with PMG magazine, Jourova remarked, “We started to relativize evil, and he’s helping it proactively. He’s the promoter of evil,” further asserting that X has emerged as “the main hub for spreading antisemitism.”

Despite having never met Musk in person, Jourova expressed her belief that “even without this personal meeting, I would say that out of all the bosses I met, he is the only one who is not able to recognize good and evil.” She voiced her concerns about the risks posed by digital platforms in the wrong hands, emphasizing the importance of ensuring that innovations benefit society, while suggesting that Musk’s platform has not taken “sufficient action” to combat antisemitism.

Musk responded to Jourova’s comments on X, stating, “if she wants to know what evil looks like, she just needs a mirror.”

In 2022, the EU enacted the Digital Services Act, enabling officials to impose fines of up to 6% of yearly global revenue on online platforms that fail to eliminate illegal content or respect transparency regulations. Preliminary findings released by the EU in July indicated that X had violated the DSA in “areas linked to dark patterns, advertising transparency and data access for researchers.”

After acquiring Twitter in the fall of 2022, Musk vowed to transform the platform into a more transparent environment dedicated to free speech and devoid of censorship. He committed to addressing hate speech and even visited Auschwitz, the site of a former Nazi death camp in Poland, in January.

Musk argued that X has “the least amount of antisemitism” compared to other platforms, noting, “it’s never going to be zero if you’ve got 600 million people on the platform.” He has also alleged that the European Commission is attempting to force him into signing “an illegal secret deal” while seeking to censor speech on X.
