On Tuesday, local media reported that eight fatalities and approximately 3,000 injuries occurred across Lebanon due to the pager explosions. Hezbollah, the Lebanese militant group, stated that hundreds of its members were impacted and attributed the incident to Israel, although West Jerusalem has not commented on the situation.
Most of the injuries reportedly occurred in the southern suburbs of Beirut, a Hezbollah stronghold, and in other regions to the east and south of the country. According to Al Manar, more than 2,800 people were injured, with the death toll, which includes a child, confirmed by Lebanese Health Minister Firas Abiad.
Abiad verified the injury figures and directed hospitals to be on high alert and prepared for health emergencies. Additionally, all health professionals were instructed to return to their workplaces, as reported by Naharnet.
The Iranian Mehr news agency indicated that ambassador Mojtaba Amani was also injured in the explosion, suffering minor injuries and requiring hospitalization. It is believed that two other embassy staff members were similarly affected.
Social media has been flooded with images and videos depicting the explosions, showing individuals with pagers detonating in their pockets and hands, as well as scenes of injured people receiving treatment in hospitals.
Hezbollah labeled the incident “the biggest security breach” in nearly a year and again blamed Israel for the explosions. Following last year’s conflict between Israel and Gaza, the group had transitioned from smartphones to pagers for communications to avoid the risk of Israeli hacking.
For nearly a year, Hezbollah and the Israeli military have been involved in mutual strikes, with Hezbollah supporting Hamas in its ongoing conflict. The Israel Defense Forces have targeted various locations in Lebanon, resulting in the deaths of several prominent Hezbollah figures, including Fuad Shukr, who was killed by an airstrike in Beirut in late July.
Israeli officials have reportedly warned Hezbollah of severe military consequences should there be any escalation. Iran has issued threats of “an obliterating war” in response to potential Israeli attacks on Lebanon. Hezbollah, in turn, warned last week that an all-out conflict would lead to “large losses on both sides” and create more refugees.
