Cybertruck explosion serves as a ‘wakeup call for terminally ill US’, says note from suspect
An Army Green Beret, suspected of orchestrating a blast outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas on New Year’s Day, maintained that the incident was not an act of terrorism but a “wakeup call” for Americans, according to letters recovered from his smartphone.

On January 1, 2025, a Tesla Cybertruck filled with fireworks, gas canisters, and camping fuel detonated outside the hotel. The driver, identified as 37-year-old Master Sgt. Matthew Livelsberger, a decorated member of the U.S. Army, died in the explosion. Although the incident caused minor injuries to seven bystanders and resulted in limited damage to the hotel, it initially raised alarms with federal investigators, who were concerned it might be a terrorist act.

Las Vegas police released Livelsberger's letters on Friday, revealing his deep frustrations with societal issues as well as his personal struggles. In one of the letters, he expressed a need “to cleanse my mind of the brothers I’ve lost and relieve myself of the burden of the lives I took.”

“This was not a terrorist attack, it was a wake up call. Americans only pay attention to spectacles and violence. What better way to get my point across than a stunt with fireworks and explosives?” Livelsberger stated.

In his letters, he emphasized his belief that the United States is in a critical state of decline. He listed numerous societal issues he felt required immediate attention, citing concerns ranging from processed foods and obesity to income inequality and homelessness. He also expressed dissatisfaction with leadership, a perceived lack of masculinity, and corruption.

“Stop obsessing over diversity. We are all diverse and DEI is a cancer,” he declared, adding that the rejection of the “DEI candidate” signaled a shift towards having “a real President instead of Weekend at Bernie’s.”

Addressing geopolitical concerns, he wrote, “We must end the war in Ukraine with a negotiated settlement. It is the only way,” and warned that “our population is too fat to join the military, yet we are facing a war with China, Russia, North Korea, and Iran before 2030.”

In another letter intended for servicemembers, veterans, and “all Americans,” he called on them to ensure that Democrats do not block Trump from taking office and to consider a “purging” of perceived societal problems.

“We are being led by weak and feckless leadership who only serve to enrich themselves,” he claimed. “Try peaceful means first, but be prepared to fight to get the Dems out of the federal government and military by any means necessary. They all must go, and a hard reset must occur for our country to avoid collapse.”

Master Sgt. Livelsberger had a distinguished military career, having served in multiple deployments across various countries, including Afghanistan and Ukraine, earning several commendations like multiple Bronze Stars. Officials revealed he had been struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder and personal challenges, including a recent separation from his wife.

Reports indicate that Livelsberger took his own life before triggering the explosion. While his letters reflect his overwhelming personal and professional pressures, authorities caution against viewing them as conclusive evidence of his motives.
