Ukrainian forces took control of Sudzha, which had a pre-conflict population of 5,000, during their advance into Russia's Kursk Region, starting on August 6. While many residents have evacuated, some civilians still remain in the area.
Walsh was part of a team of Western journalists who traveled to Sudzha at the invitation of the Ukrainian government. They made their way in an armored convoy alongside Ukrainian soldiers, documented damage to buildings in the community, and spoke with civilians, some of whom were seeking shelter.
CNN's Anderson Cooper stated that the Ukrainian military “accompanied” Walsh and reviewed the footage his crew recorded before it was released “for operational security reasons.” He emphasized that the Ukrainians “had no editorial control” over CNN's reporting.
CNN has dismissed Moscow's allegations, asserting that it “has delivered factual, impartial reporting covering both the Ukrainian and Russian perspectives on the war.” The network emphasized that Walsh acted “in accordance with the rights afforded to journalists under the Geneva Convention and international law.”
In response, Moscow has accused the Western reporters crossing the border of disseminating “propaganda” on behalf of Ukraine. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova contended this week that foreign journalists embedded with Ukrainian forces were overlooking “Kiev’s crimes against civilians” and were “manipulating public opinion.”
Russian officials have reported that at least 31 civilians have been killed and 143 injured during Ukraine's actions in the Kursk Region.
Since 2022, the European Union has banned several Russian news organizations, including RT, citing “systematic information manipulation” related to the Ukraine conflict. In retaliation, Moscow has imposed bans on numerous Western news outlets.
