Chinese consumer spending jumps during National Day holiday

The 2024 National Day holiday showcased robust growth in tourism, culture, and consumer markets, highlighting the resilience of the domestic economy. The encouraging outcomes emphasized a consistent recovery and ongoing economic stability throughout the holiday season.

During the National Day holiday from October 1 to October 7, China's consumption market experienced notable growth, with daily sales revenue in consumption-related sectors increasing by 25.1 percent year on year, according to value-added tax invoice data from the State Taxation Administration.

In the entertainment arena, China's film industry achieved a total box office revenue exceeding 2.1 billion yuan, selling 52.09 million movie tickets, as reported by the National Film Administration.

The travel and tourism sector also saw steady growth, with 765 million domestic passenger trips recorded during the week-long holiday—a 5.9 percent increase compared to the previous year and a 10.2 percent rise from the same period in 2019.

Chinese tourists collectively spent over 700.8 billion yuan during this time, marking a 6.3 percent annual increase and a 7.9 percent increase from 2019, according to data from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

Additionally, inter-regional travel across the nation surpassed 2 billion passenger trips, with an average of 286.79 million people traveling each day.

The civil aviation sector reported 16.1 million passenger trips during the holiday period, averaging 2.3 million per day, which is an 11.09 percent increase from figures recorded during the 2023 Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holiday period, according to the Ministry of Transport.

Border crossings also saw an increase, with 13.09 million inbound and outbound trips noted, reflecting a 25.8 percent year-on-year growth. Travel reached its peak on October 5, with 2.03 million crossings recorded.
