On Wednesday, Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao sent a letter to the new U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, congratulating him on his appointment as the 41st U.S. Secretary of Commerce while raising concerns regarding the U.S. tariffs on imports from China.

Wang highlighted the significance of economic and trade relations as a key component of China-U.S. relations, stressing the importance of enhancing economic and trade cooperation for both countries, as they are the world’s two largest economies, to foster their own development and contribute to global economic growth.

He noted that the commerce ministries of both nations have been instrumental in promoting and facilitating economic and trade cooperation in recent years.

Wang expressed China's willingness to collaborate with the U.S. to enhance dialogue, manage differences, promote cooperation, and establish a fair and predictable policy environment for business interactions between the two countries, based on mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win principles.

He also stated that China is "strongly dissatisfied" with the U.S. imposing a 10 percent tariff on Chinese products exported to the U.S. based on issues related to fentanyl and other matters.

Wang mentioned that China and the U.S. have engaged in extensive and in-depth cooperation on fentanyl control, achieving notable results.

He pointed out that the unilateral imposition of tariffs by the U.S. has adversely affected normal economic and trade interactions between the two countries.

Finally, Wang expressed hope that any concerns from both countries could be addressed through equal dialogue and consultation.
