China: Some national data centers using up to 80% green electricity
The utilization of green electricity has reached 80% in certain national data centers across China.
In February 2022, China initiated a project to construct an integrated national big data system, which includes the establishment of eight national computing hubs and 10 national data center clusters.
By the end of March this year, the computing power scale of these 10 clusters had surpassed 1.46 million standard racks, and the usage rate of green electricity in some advanced data centers had reached about 80 percent.
"We will continue with efforts to promote the integrated development of computing power and electricity by supporting non-hub data centers in the central and western regions rich in green power resources to integrate into the national computing power network construction, so as to improve the protection capability of the national integrated computing power network," said Du Wei, director of the Department of Digital Technology and Infrastructure Construction under the National Data Administration.
Moving forward, the National Data Bureau plans to accelerate the construction of the national integrated computing power network. It aims to advance the coordinated development of multi-source heterogeneous computing power and encourage the convergence of various computing resources to the national hubs. Additionally, the bureau intends to guide domestic telecom operators to enhance the efficiency of public transmission channels, foster collaboration between industrial data and computing power, and improve data processing and governance capabilities.
