Trump raises China tariff to 125%
The decision follows Beijing's recent response to Washington’s earlier tariff increases.

US President Donald Trump has elevated tariffs on Chinese goods to 125% in retaliation to measures taken by Beijing earlier on Wednesday.

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump stated, “based on the lack of respect that China has shown to the World’s Markets, I am hereby raising the Tariff charged to China by the United States of America to 125%, effective immediately.”

He expressed hope that Beijing would understand that “ripping off the U. S. A., and other Countries, is no longer sustainable or acceptable.”

This action came just hours after China's Finance Ministry revealed its own tariff increase, which raised tariffs on American imports to a total of 84%, effectively doubling Washington’s previous hike.

The ongoing escalation of the trade war between the two leading economies began when Trump announced a 20% tariff on all Chinese goods in March. He subsequently added an additional 34% last week, prompting a reciprocal response from Beijing.

In his Truth Social statement, the US president also mentioned a 90-day pause along with a “substantially lowered Reciprocal Tariff during this period, of 10%, also effective immediately” for various other nations that recently faced sweeping tariffs from Washington.

Trump highlighted that “more than 75 countries” had reached out to the Departments of Commerce, Treasury, and the Office of the United States Trade Representative. These nations expressed their readiness to engage in discussions regarding trade barriers, tariffs, currency manipulation, and non-monetary tariffs.

The president emphasized that, in contrast to China, “these Countries have not, at my strong suggestion, retaliated in any way, shape, or form against the United States.”
