On Friday, the National Meteorological Center issued a renewed blue alert for the cold wave and a yellow alert for strong winds, forecasting that a cold wave would progress across China from Friday to Saturday. This will lead to temperature drops in areas of the northwest and northern regions, the Huanghuai region, most parts of the south, the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau, and the western Sichuan area, with some regions experiencing drops exceeding 10 degrees Celsius.
As the cold wave moves through east China's Shandong Province, temperatures have significantly declined. Local authorities are implementing measures to secure power supply and protect agricultural production.
In the early hours, Wu Binbin, director of a power supply station in Jinan, Shandong's capital, and his team conducted patrols on the 10kV power line to avert ice-related issues. Traversing mountainous terrains and forests, they meticulously checked each pole, tower, and power line for any signs of damage, rust, or loose parts.
"The safe and stable operation of power lines is crucial for keeping homes lit and warm. No risk can be overlooked," Wu emphasized.
The recent cold snap has also challenged agricultural production in Shandong. In Shouguang, a significant vegetable production hub, local agricultural experts are offering technical advice at planting sites and within greenhouses.
Liu Chunxiang, an agricultural expert from the Shouguang Bureau of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, detailed essential strategies to mitigate the effects of the temperature drop.
"The drainage channels around the greenhouses must be cleared, and the greenhouses and thermal insulation blankets should be reinforced," Liu advised.
Shouguang's greenhouses now incorporate advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and 5G. Intelligent systems for temperature control, automated ventilation, and supplemental lighting are vital for reducing the impact of extreme weather conditions.
The region boasts around 40,000 hectares of facility-based vegetable cultivation, yielding an annual output of 4.5 million tonnes.
On Thursday, Beijing faced its harshest cold wave since winter began. In response, the city's transport sector has enacted safety measures to facilitate travel under strong winds and chilly temperatures. Subway operations have switched to manual mode, while bus services on mountainous and highway routes have adjusted their speeds.
In southwest China's Guizhou Province, transportation officials have initiated various protocols to address potential snowfall or freezing rain conditions.
As of 7 a.m. on Friday, 13 sections of expressways and national, provincial roads in the province were temporarily closed due to icy conditions, alongside the temporary shutdown of 12 toll stations.
The cold wave's impact is expected to diminish by the weekend.
